William Tucker

Skulptur und Zeichnung

William Tucker schafft seit mehr als fünf Jahrzehnten Skulpturen und ist einer der meistgeschätzten Bildhauer unserer Zeit. Neben seinem bildhauerischen Werk ist er Verfasser zahlreicher Texte zum Thema Skulptur.

 

Zusammen mit Phillip King und Tim Scott gehörte William Tucker zu der einflussreichen Gruppe britischer Bildhauer, die 1965 in der gleichnamigen Ausstellung in der Londoner Whitechapel Art Gallery als "New Generation" vorgestellt wurde. Ihre Arbeiten lieferten neue Impulse für die Entwicklung der abstrakten Bildhauerei und eine weit umfassende Interpretation des Begriffs der Skulptur. Tucker wurde eingeladen, seine Arbeiten in der wegweisenden Ausstellung Primary Structures im Jewish Museum in New York 1966 zu zeigen, die den entscheidenden Moment für die amerikanische Minimal Art darstellte.

 

Sein Buch The Language of Sculpture (Die Sprache der Skulptur) mit seiner eigenwilligen Betrachtung der modernen Skulptur von Degas und Rodin bis Brancusi und Matisse wurde 1974 veröffentlicht und hat internationale Beachtung gefunden.

 

Tuckers jüngste Skulpturen beziehen sich auf die menschliche Figur. Trotz ihres figurativen Bezugs sind die Skulpturen nicht unmittelbar entzifferbar oder identifizierbar. Vielmehr eröffnen die Werke ein breites Spektrum an Assoziationen und erreichen so ihre intensive, unbestreitbare Körperlichkeit. Tuckers Skulpturen haben eine Präsenz, die sich auf unseren Körper bezieht und uns so selber bewusster macht. Wie Joy Sleeman in The Sculpture of William Tucker schreibt, "stellt Tuckers Skulptur grundlegende Fragen danach, was Skulptur ist und was sie sein kann." (Lund Humphries/The Henry Moore Foundation, 2007).

 

William Tucker wurde 1935 in Kairo geboren und lebte in Großbritannien, bis er in den frühen 1980er Jahren in die USA zog. Zunächst lebte er in New York, später ließ er sich in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, nieder. Wichtige Skulpturen aus Tuckers jüngerer Schaffensperiode befinden sich u. a. in den Sammlungen der Tate Gallery in London, des Guggenheim Museum und des Museum of Modern Art in New York, des Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas und der Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney.
