Wolfgang Laib at The Eschaton-Anselm Kiefer Foundation in Barjac, France
In 2014, Wolfgang Laib created a 40-meter-long underground corridor with walls entirely covered in wax. Illuminated by bulbs that cast a golden glow, the space immerses visitors in a sensory, meditative environment. Taking four years to complete, this abstract, silent passage is defined as much by its architectural presence as by the scent of beeswax that permeates the air, extending beyond any visible reality. The installation is permanent.
Laib first worked with beeswax on an architectural scale in 1988, when he conceived his inaugural wax chamber for Zeitlos, an exhibition curated by Harald Szeemann at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin. The free-standing room, titled Für einen anderen Körper / For Another Body, proposed a continuity between the visitor’s body and the wax membrane and established the basic rectangular form that would reappear in his later wax environments.
