Interview with Wilhelm Mundt, Kunstforum International Bd 305, Sep/Okt 2025
—
Interview with Wilhelm Mundt by Michael Krajewski featured in the current issue of Kunstforum International (Volume 305, German language only).
"I create the conditions to miss as little as possible of what could potentially be decisive; and you never know in advance exactly when that will happen."
— Wilhelm Mundt
"Amid fields and trees, where the wind sweeps freely through an open hall in Rommerskirchen in the Lower Rhine region, Wilhelm Mundt works on his Trashstones, the works for which he is best known. The glossy, biomorphic sculptures evoke futuristic industrial products, as if they came from a high-tech plastics factory. Yet appearances are deceptive: these singular objects are entirely handcrafted. Using remnants from his daily artistic practice, he shapes them layer by layer, wet-sanding and polishing them until they achieve a flawless, perfect surface. How does this seemingly industrial perfection relate to an artistic process that appears original and almost archaic? This tension between appearance and reality forms the starting point of our studio visit." (translated by Buchmann Galerie)
