Daniel Buren at the Le Bon Marché Paris, France
—
Since 2016, Le Bon Marché Paris has invited a contemporary artist each year to take over different areas of the store during the winter months. In 2024, the French artist Daniel Buren, a leading figure in conceptual and minimalist art, is given carte blanche to create a site-specific installation. But this time, twice: Act 1 from January to February and Act 2 from June to August.
Daniel Buren draws inspiration from the square panes of glass that define the store’s iconic stained-glass windows. In Act I, the artist will transform the space with monumental installations beneath the central glass roofs, on the second floor, and in the shop windows. His legendary alternating black and white stripes, 8.7 centimeters wide, will interact with the central escalator and the columns of the rue de Sèvres.
A key figure in contemporary art, Daniel Buren’s works have been displayed in major institutions around the world, from the Centre Pompidou to the Guggenheim. His art continues to challenge and expand our understanding of space and perception.
Act II of “Aux Beaux Carrés” will be presented from June 29 to August 15, 2024.
