The painting has a captivating presence, and although it is abstract, it is reminiscent of an ocean
This may be partly due to the fact that Jason Martin spends most of his time in his studio south of Lisbon, near the sea. The painting is not conceived as a landscape, but it refers to it through the composition of the pictorial space and the color palette. It is a reference that Jason Martin describes as “records of a belated naturalism” — testaments to a “naturalism of afterwardsness,”in which the imaginary and real intersect.
