In his most recent group of work entitled Resins, Jason Martin explores the relationship between surface and image carrier with a surprising mate- riality. The softly luminous works, which oscillate between sculpture and painting, captivate with their sensual quality.
The works are executed as casts in a sculptural process, the translucent synthetic resin conceal- ing inlaid dichroic foils. These foils, textured and wrinkled by the artist during the casting process, refract light, similar to a prism, creat- ing an illusion of iridescent colour. The actual effective pictorial surface of the works, known in painting history as factura, is deeply concealed in a sculptural block that creates a very specific spatiality.
