Daniel Buren at MAM Rio, Brazil

In January 2026, MAM Rio invites Daniel Buren for the first Brazilian edition of Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile (Sail/Canvas – Canvas/Sail).

The work, which transforms boat sails into an artistic medium, will take place in Rio in two stages. The project begins with a regatta-performance in Guanabara Bay: eleven Optimist sailboats depart from Marina da Glória with sails printed with Buren’s iconic vertical stripes, activating the route between the marina and Flamengo Beach as a moving artistic intervention.

Upon the boats’ arrival, the sails are brought to MAM Rio, where they become part of an exhibition derived from the regatta. Installed in the order of arrival, they highlight the transition from functional use to the artistic field, extending within the museum the experience created at sea.
