Lawrence Carroll I want to go home
On Saturday, 18 February 2017 at 5.00 pm, the Buchmann Lugano city space will present a large work by Lawrence Carroll (Melbourne 1954), an artist of Australian origin.
Carroll’s work, often on the boundary between painting and sculpture, is pervaded by an intense sense of poetry and a subtle autobiographical imprint. His paintings have a great force of intensity, expressed prevalently by colour tonalities that recall the delicate shades of Morandi and others. His painting transcends the ordinary and transforms it into an emotive experience that resembles meditation. His art, as Gianfranco Maraniello writes, ‘always refers to something else, if not to “everything else”; it evokes the past and announces the unthinkable’.[1] In his paintings, Carroll explores the very nature of painting as the artist himself writes:
Painting is something different for everybody.
Whether you look at them or make them. There is no one way to understand a painting and there is no one way in which they are made. This will forever always be.
My paintings don't come from the politics or turbulence of the world. My paintings come from moments almost lost in the passing day.
I carry with me these moments, stored,
buried away in a life that is passing, in hopes to rescue them and to give them the dignity they deserve.

From May 2017, for his solo exhibition at the Museo Vincenzo Vela in Ligornetto, Lawrence Carroll will also present works prepared specifically for the show in Ticino.
At the 55th Biennale d’Arte di Venezia, Carroll represented the new pavilion of the Holy See.
His works are to be found in important public collections such as the Guggenheim Museum New York, MOCA Los Angeles, Museo de Bellas Artes Caracas, National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, Städtische Kunsthalle Mannheim, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, MASI Lugano, MART Rovereto, Villa Panza Varese and EMMA Museum Espoo.

Lo spazio cittadino Buchmann Lugano presenta a partire da sabato 18 febbraio alle ore 17.00 un’opera di grandi dimensioni dell’artista di origini australiane Lawrence Carroll (*1954, Melbourne).
Il lavoro di Carroll, spesso al limite tra pittura e scultura, è pervaso da un sentimento altamente poetico e un’impronta autobiografica più o meno esplicita. I dipinti sono carichi di intensità, espressa in prevalenza dalle tonalità di colore che ricordano le delicate gradazioni di Morandi e altri artisti. Una pittura che trascende l’ordinario e lo trasforma in un’esperienza emotiva quasi meditativa. La sua arte, come scrive
Gianfranco Maraniello “rinvia sempre ad altro, se non a tutto “il resto”, evoca il trascorso e annuncia l’impensato.”[1] Carroll nei suoi dipinti indaga la natura stessa della pittura, l’artista stesso scrive:
La pittura è per ognuno qualcosa di diverso.
Sia che tu la guardi, o che tu la faccia: non c’è solo un modo per capire un dipinto, come non c’è solo un modo per farlo. E sarà così per sempre.
La mia pittura non muove da questioni sociali o dalle turbolenze del mondo. La mia pittura nasce da momenti più o meno persi nel giorno che se ne va.
Quei momenti li porto con me, conservati,
sepolti nella vita che passa, nella speranza di metterli in salvo e dar loro la dignità che meritano.

A partire da maggio 2017 Lawrence Carroll presenterà in occasione della sua mostra personale presso il Museo Vincenzo Vela di Ligornetto anche lavori realizzati appositamente per l’esposizione in Ticino.
Alla 55. Biennale d’Arte di Venezia Carroll ha rappresentato il nascente padiglione della Santa Sede.
Sue opere fanno parte di importanti collezioni pubbliche quali il Guggenheim Museum New York, MOCA Los Angeles, Museo de Bellas Artes Caracas, National Museum of Modern Art Tokyo, Städtische Kunsthalle Mannheim, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, MASI Lugano, MART Rovereto, Villa Panza Varese, EMMA Museum Espoo.
