This pocket-sized monograph records a recent body of work from the much-admired Portuguese artist Pedro Cabrita Reis (born 1956). The black-and-white photographs in Tree of Light are intimate portraits of thousand-year-old olive trees that the artist maintains in a grove near his home in the Algarve.

In the beginning, dust made of steps, a way of stones.
A dry one.
Then the earth was awakened, recalled the voice of iron, and inside, reaching the clarity out of which I'm telling you this, it listened to the whispering of the water, a happy crying that came later.
The words were then spread by the mouth of men, and with the words, and brought by hands, there returned these trees, from places beyond the gaze, leaves feared by fire, never falling.
A few might be found, not here, that more than once saw in more than a thousand years the blackness of the earth suffocated in blood, and after the night, they flourished with the mildness of love.
They stayed behind to light up our way. Trees of light.
