William Tucker Sculture
The Buchmann Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of its first exhibition devoted exclusively to the sculptor William Tucker (*1935, Cairo).
In the 1970s, Tucker was counted among the influential group of English sculptors, who were introduced as the “New Generation” at the eponymous exhibition at London’s Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1965 and whose works provided new inspiration for the development of abstract sculpture as well as a far broader interpretation of the concept of sculpture. William Tucker was also invited to the seminal exhibition “Primary Structures” at the Jewish Museum in York in 1966, the defining moment for American Minimal Art. A theorist, critic and exhibition organiser at the time, Tucker organised “The Condition of Sculpture” exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London in 1975.
He had also been Professor at the University of Western Ontario - Canada, at the Halifax Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, at the Columbia University and at the New York Studio School.
Important sculptures from Tucker can be found, among others, in the collection of the Tate Gallery in London, at the Guggenheim Museum and the MoMA in New York, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas and the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney.
Agra Gallery outside and inside exhibition areas host, for the first time, some artworks of the American/British sculptor. These sculptures merge abstract and figurative languages. At first sight, the artworks are difficult to interpret while they assume a clear meaning when correlated to their titles. Tucker’s artworks compare and discuss with the Nature as well as with the structure and mass of the human body.
The exhibition at the Buchmann Gallery has also the chance to display a monumental bronze, Vishnu and other works such as Victory.

La Galleria Buchmann è lieta di annunciare l’apertura della prima mostra dedicata allo scultore William Tucker (*1935, Cairo).
A partire dagli anni ’70, William Tucker apparteneva al gruppo di scultori inglesi riconosciuti e introdotti quali “New Generation” dall’omonima esposizione tenutasi alla Whitechapel Art Gallery nel 1965. I suoi lavori fornirono una nuova fonte di ispirazione per lo sviluppo della scultura astratta così come, in un più ampio contesto, nell’interpretazione stessa del concetto di scultura. Nel 1966 William Tucker veniva invitato ad esporre al Jewish Museum di New York nell’ambito della mostra “Primary Structures”, rivelatasi decisiva per la corrente della Minimal Art americana.
Tucker nel corso degli anni si è distinto non solo come scultore, ma anche quale teorico, critico e curatore di mostre. Nel 1975 Tucker ha organizzato presso la Hayward Gallery di Londra la mostra “The Condition of Sculpture”.

Gli spazi interni ed esterni della Galleria di Agra, ospitano per la prima volta diverse opere dello scultore britannico/americano, in cui si fonde l’astratto con il figurativo. In effetti, i suoi bronzi che appaiono in un primo tempo difficilmente decifrabili, una volta messi in relazione al titolo assumono un nuovo significato.
I lavori di Tucker si confrontano e dialogano con la natura, così come con la struttura e i volumi del corpo umano.
La Galleria ha inoltre la fortuna di poter esporre un bronzo monumentale Vishnu, oltre a opere come Victory.
