DRAWINGS BY TONY CRAGG AND MARIO MERZ
The Buchmann Galerie Lugano is pleased to present a new presentation focusing on works on paper by Tony Cragg and Mario Merz. On the main wall of the gallery space are several drawings by the British artist made in the 1990s.
Tony Cragg as a sculptor regularly devotes himself to drawing and graphics, which are the point of origin for the creative process of many different types of sculptures. Cragg draws inspiration from his surroundings - nature and its organic compositions, the crystalline structures of minerals, geology. Art and science merge in his practice, creating an unlimited series of forms and combinations.
Mario Merz is represented with an artwork on paper consisting of 14 drawings titled Il legno formato, 1983 made with pencil, colored pencils and scales of fir cone. This work is reproduced in the catalogue of the monographic exhibition Mario Merz. Drawings held at the Kunstmuseum in Winterthur and the Fondazione Merz in Turin in 2007. Drawing is the starting point of Mario Merz's work. As he himself relates, "I am the boy who went to the fields hoping to be able to bring home a drawing without having to imitate the landscape of the 19th century. The boy who drew the sensations of nature." Rejecting all that is definitive and interpreting his own work as a sketch, Merz sees drawing as the most suitable medium, as well as the most intimate.
Along with the artworks of our artists is also presented the DAPRESBOOMOON carpet designed by Davide Macullo in wool and silk.

La Buchmann Galerie Lugano è lieta di esporre una nuova presentazione dedicata ai lavori su carta di Tony Cragg e Mario Merz. Sulla parete principale dello spazio sono esposti numerosi disegni dell’artista inglese realizzati negli anni Novanta.
Tony Cragg come scultore si dedica regolarmente al disegno e alla grafica che rappresentano il punto di origine del processo creativo di molte tipologie di sculture. Cragg trae ispirazione da ciò che lo circonda ‒ la natura e le sue composizioni organiche, le strutture cristalline dei minerali, la geologia. Arte e scienza si fondono nella sua pratica, creando una serie di forme e combinazioni illimitate.
Mario Merz è presente con un’opera su carta composta da 14 disegni dal titolo Il legno formato del 1983 realizzata con matita, matite colorate e squame di pigna di abete. Questo lavoro è riprodotto nel catalogo della importante mostra monografica Mario Merz. Disegni tenutasi al Kunstmuseum di Winterthur e alla Fondazione Merz di Torino nel 2007. Il disegno è il punto di partenza dell’opera di Mario Merz. Come lui stesso racconta: “Io sono il ragazzo che andava nei campi sperando di poter portare a casa un disegno senza dover imitare il paesaggio dell’Ottocento. Il ragazzo che disegnava le sensazioni della natura.” Rifiutando tutto ciò che è definitivo e interpretando il proprio lavoro come una bozza, Merz vede nel disegno il mezzo più adatto, oltre che il più intimo.
Insieme alle opere dei nostri artisti è presentato anche il tappeto DAPRESBOOMOON realizzato su disegno di Davide Macullo in lana e seta.
