Daniel Buren Westwind, Arbeiten situés

Daniel Buren (b. 1938, Boulogne-Billancourt) is one of the most influential living French artists and is considered one of the fiercest critics of contemporary art. During his career, he has adopted an artistic stance that scrutinises and questions the essence of art and the systems supporting it. 

The exhibition at Buchmann Galerie Berlin presents a spectacular new work which is especially created for the gallery space. 

Daniel Buren uses striped fabric, a similar material he used for his ground-breaking works in the 1960s. For the new work presented in Berlin, Daniel Buren uses his „visual tool“, the sign of white and color alternating stripes of exactly 8,7 cm in width, a unit of measure for all of his works. 

23 flags hanging from the ceiling form an even grid. Ventilators blow air from the west, keeping the flags in continuous motion. The fleeting breeze creates their form. 

Daniel Buren’s intention as an artist is to make the context of the artwork visible to the spectator: space, light, color proportions but also to awaken the consciousness of the beholder. By altering perspectives, his work creates a true modification of the context. In institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum New York or, most recently, at the Musée Picasso in Paris and at the Neues Museum Nuremberg, Daniel Buren has created breathtaking installations. 

Daniel Buren’s work is in private and public collections all over the world. There are more than 80 permant installations worldwide. He was awarded the Golden Lion for his French Pavilion at Venice Biennale in 1986. In 2007 he received the Praemium Imperiale from Japan.
